Small Turkish militias were united under on the 27 July 1957 and turned into the Turkish Resistance Organisation ( TMT ) on 1st August 1958, by Burhan Nalbantoğlu, Rauf Denktaş and Kemal Tanrısevdi in Lefkoşa. On the 1st of April 1955, EOKA terror organisation was established and EOKA members were firing at Turkish villages and killing. Naturally the Turkshad to protect their own lives against the EOKA. Hence they formed small militias to counter the EOKA threat. These small military groups were not efficiant, therefore Turkish Resistance Organisation ( TMT ) had been established. What is EOKA and ENOSIS? EOKA is a Greek terorist group formed in Cyprus with the aim of annexing Cyprus to Greece (ENOSIS). ENOSIS is the annexiation of Cyprus to Greece. And is a part of the 'Megalo Idea' ideology. Megalo Idea implied the goal of reviving the Byzantine Empire by establishing a Greek state, which would be, as ancient geographer Strabo wrote, a Greek world encompassing mostly the former Byzantine lands from the Ionian Sea to Asia Minor and Black Sea to the east, and from Thrace, Macedonia and Epirus, north, to Crete and Cyprus to the south. This new state will have its capital in Istanbul. The Aims of TMT; • To protect the life and all property of the Turks of Cyprus, • To reply all terror activities about the idea ENOSIS and its derivatives • To cope with all assaults from EOKA and its derivaties • To ensure solidarity and unity of the Turks and to prevent AKEL’s activities which includes ENOSIS. • To protect the Turks of Cyprus against Greek and English attacks.
